Edmonton Journal Cigarettes Michael Walters is in favour of banning cigarette smoking on Churchill Square downtown. "We have talked about making (Churchill Square) a healthy place that's attractive to families and active all the time, and the level of cigarette smoke in the air I think deters families from coming, Walters says. What do you think? Should smoking be banned there? Smoking was rightly banned in restaurants and night clubs because of the health threat it poses to the staff workers, who had to work in that environment all day. Smoking outside is a different issue. I wonder if there a real public health issue. I doubt that there is any kind of serious one. That said, there is a major nuisance issue being around folks who smoke. It a smelly, filthy habit, at least to many of us who don engage in it. The strong reaction against smoking is reinforced as more and more places are smoke free. I can go for days in my own neighborhood and through the pedways of downtown and not run in to one smoker. As a result, the whiff of smoking seems all the more an affront when I do come across it. Is it really that much of a bother outdoors that the anti-smoking brigade should seek to ban it? Can you just avoid areas where smokers are? I do it successfully every time I walk a downtown street. I going to suggest that there also a class and/or age element driving this debate. In the downtown area around Churchill Square, it mainly tough-looking and loud teenagers and 20-somethings who smoke. Perhaps part of this is an effort to make them feel less welcome. They a rough looking bunch, they make some folks feel uncomfortable and there been ongoing issues with crime and intimidation around Churchill Square.
